Baby Signs®

| What are Baby Signs®? |
| They are symbolic gestures that babies can use before they learn words, such as touching thumb to lips for
"drink," or fingertips to mouth for "eat," or fingertips together for "more." These
modified signs provide an immediate way for babies to communicate, enhance parentchild interaction,
help develop the concept of cause and effect, and demonstrate the power of communication.
|
| Workshops |
The Crimson Center for Speech & Language offers several workshops designed to promote overall interaction
between parents and their young children. Our program can accelerate the development of communication skills
in toddlers and infants.
Workshops are specifically designed for parents of children from birth to 24 months of age. We provide materials
and instruction needed to integrate Baby Signs® in a home environment, as well as recommend other resources.
Early childhood educators, therapists, parent educators, social workers, and health specialists also find our
workshops helpful in presenting a unique form of early language stimulation to parents.
Special workshops, combining Baby Signs® with traditional speech and language therapy are also available
for children diagnosed with communication delays, as well as for those considered at high risk for delays.
|
| When Should I Start? |
Parents talk to babies from the day they are born, sometimes even before birth. Baby Signs® can be
effectively introduced at the same time. It has been suggested that children are particularly receptive
to this symbolic form of communication by the time they are eight or nine months of age. Some families
begin modeling signs at birth just to get into the habit.
|
